The Fat Duck Inn came as a welcome relief after making thelong trip from Seattle to Walla Walla in a cramped tour bus. I arrived late inthe evening but my key was left out for me with a handwritten note welcoming meto the Inn. I silently grabbed the key and made my way to the room. Uponentering I was struck by how spacious the room was. I literally would have hadroom to run if I wasn’t so tired. The bathroom was very roomy as well, but myonly focus at the moment was hitting the ever so inviting bed. I woke early the next morning feeling completely restedafter enjoying one of the best night’s sleep that I had experienced in weeks. Iliterally could have slept on the floor I was so tired, but that bed wasamazing. It was so comfortable. After warming up with a few hot laps around the room Islipped out the front door for a jog around the neighborhood. Fat Duck is insuch a great location. Literally just a half dozen blocks from downtown... ... View Full Post >>

My Wife was otherwise occupied with school work so I took my eldest son with me to try out this place that had been recommended by a couple of friends. Not sure what I expected but was blown away by the quality of food and service. We started with a wine flight and the Warm Feta Cheese plate. Then came the freshest and most balanced Ceasar Salad ever, good flavor without overpowering the romaine. Next was the roasted duck deboned and perfectly prepared. grilled veggies and Isreali couscous as sides. to top it off we tried the deserts the Lemon Creme Brulee was silky and wonderful and paired with an early Muscat Yum, and the Chocalate Decadence cake, Naughty Version (just a hint of Cayene). paired with a Shiraz. This is definately a place to take someone you wish to impress. You better make reservations on Friday or Saturday night as it fills up fast. Steve and Martin are the most gracious of hosts and I hope to soon be great... ... View Full Post >>

A revolution is occuring, Everett now has a winery that is also a great entertainment spot. Featuring local talent with no cover charge. My first visit was a Jazz Band and last week it was May Palmer, Queen of Ivory Soul. The wines are a real draw too. To be released on April 24th is Spank Monkey a value priced 50/50 Cab Merlot blend. May Palmer will be performing again so you won't want to miss this one.

When I first washed ashore here almost thirty years ago, my first memories were of a sleepy little town called Edmonds, that had recently gone ga-ga over some local ice skater (Rosalynn Sumners) who became the U.S. Champion and Olympic silver medalist. Seattle had one, count 'em, one espresso stand at the old Westlake tower entrance for the monorail. And, Tom Douglas was likely washing dishes somewhere in downtown Seattle. The first restaurant I dined at was Anthony's HomePort in Edmonds and if you've been there, you know how unforgettable the view is of the Puget Sound, Olympic Mountains, Whidbey Island, the ferry, and the fishing boats. And, the food was really delicious. After I got the school thing out of the way and when I made real money, I took my dates out to this remote locale because of the really good food at a reasonable price, good service, and a knockout view was all I needed to keep my "slugging percentage" up for the night. Sure, there were other Anthony's... ... View Full Post >>

Forgeron Cellars, a Wine Bloggers Conference highlight!

Well the Second annual Wine Bloggers Conference had come and gone and the third one is fast approaching, just about three month away. Last years conference was my first one to attend and it certainly will not be my last, as I have already made my plans to attend this year’s conference and I can hardly wait. It's been far too long since I've been to the Washington State wine region. The reason I choose this wine for review is twofold, one it’s a great example of what a Chardonnay should taste like, balanced. It's no Chateau Two by Four, but it's also not a recent adherent to the ABC movement and their "no more oak" mantra. The second reason I am reviewing this wine is because of the third annual Wine Blogger Conference will be held in wonderful, Walla Walla, WA this year and I wanted to take this opportunity to review a few of the wines of this region. Walla Walla, I'm going to highly recommend that you'd better come out with Guns Blazin' and from... ... View Full Post >>

Hey San Diego wine fans, I was in one of my favorite local wine stores [the San Diego Wine Company] the other day for a tasting of some wonderful Bordeaux’s when I came across this beauty of a wine. Okay this wine was not in the tasting line-up, but if it would have been allowed in the tasting, similar priced Bordeaux would have been put to shame! I know this is saying quite a bit, but this wine is just superb. This bottle hails from the great state of Washington, where some fabulous wine is being made, specifically from the Red Mountain, AVA in Washington State. The Red Mountain AVA, Washington's smallest appellation [while small in size, it not small in quality] which is situated between the cities of Benton City and West Richland within the larger Yakima Valley just north of the Oregon border. The south facing (here is one of key reasons for the success of this wine) slope of Red Mountain which is home to more than 37 wineries, including some of Washington's... ... View Full Post >>

Wine and Sweets! Candybar in SF: WinoTripping quick Review

We stopped in to CandyBar, a hip little wine bar and dessert lounge in the Western Addition (A.K.A. NoPa) Neighborhood in San Francisco. The clean, minimal design and comfy seating invited us to come in, (we couldn't stop ourselves!), and pick from the small, but nice, menu of sweet and dry wines. Or maybe we would get crazy with one of their specialty cocktails; like the Blood Orange Bellini, or the Blueberry Pomegranate Fusion. Then there's the sweets! Oh my! There's a Butterscotch Chocolate Browie... or Blueberry Mochi Cake... or Banana Bread Pudding... oh, it is something. The wine list is cool, too. They've got about six each of reds and whites, then a few sparkling and dessert wines. We tried Steven Bannus 2008 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, and Pozzan 2007 Napa Valley Zinfandel, which were both well balanced and delicious. The Pinot was elegant and smooth. The Zinfandel spicy, with nice dark fruit and a nice finish. Just about all the wines are available by... ... View Full Post >>

My first experience with this venue was for a tweetup where we were served samples of their woodfired flat bread pizzas and their house wine Wrongo Dongo. This wine from Jumilla Spain called Monastrell is a Mouvedre and is an awesome bargain. The Pizzas ranged from Blue cheese with figs to procuitto with truffle oil all were superb. My next experience was for Valentines dinner (on Saturday the 13th) The cocktails were delish and the starters were Mussels and Duck Sliders, both were devoured by our group. Then we had a range of pizzas and one had the shortribs not a disparaging comment from anyone. Service was spot on on a very busy night. This will become a regular date night spot. I also overheard they are working to increase their local (WA) wine list. Check their website for the menu.

I was invited to a tweetup at Epulo, which for the uninitiated is a live meeting of Twitter folks to sample then twitter about a subject, be it food wine or some other subject. I invited my friends from Edmonds Winery and were greeted by the General Manager and @incrediblechef who were hosting the event. We were served samples of their wood fired pizza and $2 glasses of Wrongo Dongo Mouvedre from Spain an awesome 92-94 point wine. The pizzas were tasty, my favorite was the Prosciutto with shaved Grana Padano, garlic, truffle oil, arugula . All the samples were great, with a thin crispy crust and just the right amount of toppings. I made reservations for Sat the 13th for my wife and I to try their full menu. The atmosphere is relaxed yet trendy and the service was amazing.

Taste Washington - A beautiful day to drink 400 wines!

Taste Washington - Grand Tasting Seattle, WA http://www.tastewashington.org
|
The Grand Tasting portion of Taste Washington is the premier Washington wine event of the year. If you are a fan of not just WA wine but wine in general this is a can’t miss event. Here are the stats: 200+ wineries, 60+ restaurants, and an incredible amount of wine (approx 400 different bottles)! The ticket prices at $85 and $125, for early entry, may seem a little steep but it’s really worth it considering everything you get. I recommend the “VIP” ticket, which really doesn’t provide any other amenities except getting you through the door early. But with an extra 2 hours to drink and eat before things get really crowded can provide the best opportunity to hit the key wineries you’ve always wanted to try…many of whom pour out of wine during the event. My focus is always on the wine, with everything else including the food around as an extra bonus. I usually nerd up a couple days before and go over the list of participating wineries... ... Taste Washington - Education Seminars Seattle, WA http://www.tastewashington.org
|
As part of Taste Washington, the educational seminars provide an informative look into Washington’s wine industry prior to the Grand Tasting on Sunday. Now you might not think that sitting through a wine class on a Saturday afternoon sounds like that much fun, but the seminar experience is more often about tasting/drinking wine than getting too nerdy over a bunch of facts and figures. This year the three sessions included seminars on Klipsun Vineyard, Best New Washington Chef’s, value wines, a 1999 to present day comparison tasting, Champoux Vineyard, Cabernet Franc, Washington’s Garagiste winemakers, and a “Which One’s Washington” game show-like tasting. At $45 per class the seminar might seem a little steep, especially if you plan on attending more than one, but after you consider everything included it’s actually a pretty good deal. A light breakfast is provided before the early session and lunch is included with any seminar... ... View Full Post >>

Switch - Weird, Another Swanky Vegas Steak Restaurant

Switch 3131 Las Vegas Boulevard S. Las Vegas, NV 89109 (702) 770-7171 www.encorelasvegas.com

Switch, the swanky steak & seafood restaurant at the new Encore hotel (Wynn’s equivalent to Mandalay’s “The Hotel”), got it’s name due to the interior of the restaurant changing. Four times an hour the walls and ceiling of the restaurant change their theme (not “theme” as in theme park or theme party, just a different look) while the lighting dims and ominous music plays all around. Ok, that does sound pretty theme parkesque, but that’s Vegas for you! As with any high-end restaurant in one of Vegas’ poshest hotels (one of only two 5-star hotels) the menu isn’t cheep, but it is pretty damn good! For starters I enjoyed a lobster salad with some sparkling pink bubbly. The second course included a bottle of Cristom Mt. Jefferson Pinot Noir. Looking over the extensive wine list this was one of the least expensive offerings at $69 (normally retailing for $30), and in my opinion one of the best Quality-Price Ratio... ... View Full Post >>

Il Terrazzo Carmine 411 1st Ave S Seattle, WA 98104 (206) 467-7797 www.ilterrazzocarmine.com

Il Terrazzo Carmine was a surprise on several levels. For starters, my friends and I didn’t plan to eat there but when our initial dinner choice fell through I jumped on my iPhone and did a combined search for nearby Italian restaurants (combined because I first used the Urban Spoon app to find some possibilities and then I used the maps application to locate the restaurant). Yeah, I know, I’m a nerd. “Il T”, as I’ve chosen to call it for this review, is located in Seattle’s Pioneer District just off 1st Ave. It was difficult to find given its residence inside another building, and the fact that the sign doesn’t really jump out at you. But after a couple sets of double doors you’ll finally find yourself inside the restaurant, which actually offers quite a nice atmosphere as opposed to the exterior. It reminded me of dining out in New York where hidden restaurants dawning drab exteriors can reveal a surprise once your... ... View Full Post >>
