I am often asked what it takes to be a Winery Volunteer, so I thought I would jot down a few random things that came to mind.

The first thing is time; you have to be available when the winery has need of help. Most small Winery owners have “Day Jobs” so most likely the times for volunteering will be outside of normal work hours, evenings and weekends. This is advantageous to us part time winery workers as in most cases we also have “Day Jobs.” Because this tends to be the luck of coincidences it is advisable to sign up at many wineries then chances are something will match your schedule.

The second is a desire to learn, every winery does things a little different so you have to be willing to learn how they "do it." Some have invested in equipment to automate some of the processes others do everything by hand and each winemaker has their own philosophy of what best suits their wine making methods. While you should not be afraid to share your... ...

Join our group on Friday, May 14th for an early evening tasting the great Washington wines of Edmonds Winery and Peng Wines that are imported from Chile. Edmonds Winery is opening their Tasting Roomin Woodinville specially for us...AND...everyone gets to taste at least 10 wines (5 each) presented by experts...AND...they're including some complimentary breads and cheeses... AND BEST YET...you get all this for a measly $15... that's right only $15, if you buy your ticket online by May 10th! Think about it... you get to try 10 wines, presented by wine experts, at the winery tasting room, open exclusively for us, and they are including some lite apps to go with it...for only $15...if you buy your ticket online by May 10th. How great a deal is that! Now, here's an extra kicker in this great deal... if you buy any of the wines that you try, you get a $5 credit towards the purchase...for each winery... meaning, if you buy 1-bottle of Edmonds... ...

Just wanted to share that we have launched our iPhone app for Napa and Carneros.

You can find it on iTunes under AOC Travel Guides or: http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/aoc-travel-guides/id330726792

We created four itineraries traveling through Napa, Yountville, St. Helena, Calistoga and Sonoma. Each day starts with breakfast, cool things to do before the wineries open, lunch, an afternoon full of winery visits, and a dinner recommendation.

We also list WHAT NOT TO DO - basically all the tourist traps we encountered.

Currently we hold a five star rating (out of five)!

Last night (March 25, 2010) I participated in what may be the largest wine tasting ever. The #WAMerlot was a twitter event where anyone anywhere was encouraged to taste a Washington Merlot wine and share their experiences on Twitter. I was invited to host this event for Russells Dining & Bar in Bothell, WA. The Merlot we had for tasting was the 2007 Hestia Cellars Merlot. I had my laptop set up and tweeted the comments of the visitors as well as my own experiences. All Tweets included the hashtag (#) of #WAMerlot. This event was created and organized by a fellow tweeter Josh Wade (@NectarWine). Many wine shops, wineries, and restaurants hosted events around this and was a great success. I look forward to the next Washington Wine event.

Well, this is interesting (but honestly, unintended). My last wine review (Gramercy Cellars' 2007 tempranillo) elicited some surprising responses from some unexpected readers.
As a side note, for those of you loyal enough to read my wine reviews (and I thank you graciously, as well as wonder if I have irreversibly warped your views of the world!), you should know that my blogs are targeted to those who have finished a long day of work, whether it's making wine or peanuts. My columns should make you laugh, be informed, and give you a visualization of what the performance of the wine is. However, I have many weaknesses in my approach, as I am relatively new to this, so if you point one out...get in line (and email me about it!).
I am first, and foremost, a consumer. My wine experience starts with a trip to the store, like 99+% of the world's inhabitants. From store to table, this is the wine experience that shows up in my review. It's important to me, and should be... ...

Long-awaited opening weekend for the big-box tasting room of Alder Ridge Estate Winery located in the strip mall anchored by Mazatlan Restaurant at the Hollywood Schoolhouse roundabout in Woodinville.
Some background: Alder Ridge's origins lie in its vast 812-acre vineyard, planted in 1997, rolling 15 miles west of Paterson (in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA...thank you ChrisinSunnyside for pointing that out), a (careful--new word coming) preciping sentinel over the mighty Columbia River. As you can imagine, a vineyard of that size in central Washington is prone to varying soils and micro-climates, making this more a "collection" of smaller vineyards, each with its own identity. Alder Ridge is owned by the Baty family, which includes 65 year-old Daniel R. Baty, chairman and CEO of Emeritus Corporation (independent living facilities) and Chairman of the Board for Columbia Pacific Management. Both companies are fully owned by Mr. Baty. With those titles, yes, it's... ...

Lots of typing today for me...let's get it rolling in Woodinville! Roll 'em:

Adams Bench wine tasting by appt. only, Sat. noon-4. $10 refundable tasting fee. The cabernet is a leading contender for 2010 Wine of the Year!
Alexandria Nicole Cellars Happy Hour, Fri. 5-7:30pm. I sense they may have some of their club wines ready to taste. Try the syrah!
Chateau Ste. Michelle VRC Happy Hour Fridays, 5-7pm.
Columbia Winery Q&A with Ken Mansfield, North American manager for the Beatles, Sat. 2-4pm. $9.09 admission with proceeds going to cancer research. Includes complimentary tasting at the bar and autograph session. Special VIP parking available for yellow submarines.
DeLille Cellars Reserve Tasting at the Chateau, Fri.-Sun. noon-3 (three sittings), $35 advance.

How do the Wine Scores equate to each other?

Different people like to rate wines in different ways, and we aim to please. So we give you 2 options.

You can rate wine on a scale of 0-5 Glasses, or for finer detail, you can rate wine on a 100 point scale.

We do the conversion for you so all Wine Ratings display both values. The table below shows you the conversion:

= 50 points or less.
= 51 - 57 points.
= 58 - 62 points.
= 63 - 67 points.
= 68 - 72 points.
= 73 - 77 points.
= 78 - 82 points.
= 83 - 87 points.
= 88 - 92 points.
= 93 - 96 points.
= 97 - 100 points
