My Wife was otherwise occupied with school work so I took my eldest son with me to try out this place that had been recommended by a couple of friends.  Not sure what I expected but was blown away by the quality of food and service.  We started with a wine flight and the Warm Feta Cheese plate.  Then came the freshest and most balanced Ceasar Salad ever, good flavor without overpowering the romaine.  Next was the roasted duck deboned and perfectly prepared.  grilled veggies and Isreali couscous as sides.  to top it off we tried the deserts the Lemon Creme Brulee was silky and wonderful and paired with an early Muscat Yum, and the Chocalate Decadence cake, Naughty Version (just a hint of Cayene). paired with a Shiraz.  This is definately a place to take someone you wish to impress.  You better make reservations on Friday or Saturday night as it fills up fast.  Steve and Martin are the most gracious of hosts and I hope to soon be great... ...

Just wanted to share that we have launched our iPhone app for Napa and Carneros.

You can find it on iTunes under AOC Travel Guides or: http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/aoc-travel-guides/id330726792

We created four itineraries traveling through Napa, Yountville, St. Helena, Calistoga and Sonoma. Each day starts with breakfast, cool things to do before the wineries open, lunch, an afternoon full of winery visits, and a dinner recommendation.

We also list WHAT NOT TO DO - basically all the tourist traps we encountered.

Currently we hold a five star rating (out of five)!

Here are my top 5 reasons to travel to Washington Wine Country:
  1.  Amazing scenery!  Start in Seattle and drive east into the Cascade Mountains and on the other side you will enter the Columbia Valley which is home to some of the most famous wineries in Washington State such as Columbia Crest, Dusted Valley Vintners, SpringValley Vineyards and PepperbridgeWinery.   2.  Hot and dry climate.  Certain areas of the Columbia Valley only get about 6 - 8 inches of rain per year so chances are if you visit you can leave the umbrella at home.  Just remember to bring a jacket as the nights can get cool.
  3.  Great vineyard restaurants.   A great place is Tagaris Winery Tagaris Taverna either on their "Patio Kouzina" (patio kitchen in greek) or inside the restaurant.   They use mostly local fruit, vegetables (some from their own garden) and meat on the menu so you can truly experience the great food that the... ...

When I first washed ashore here almost thirty years ago, my first memories were of a sleepy little town called Edmonds, that had recently gone ga-ga over some local ice skater (Rosalynn Sumners) who became the U.S. Champion and Olympic silver medalist. Seattle had one, count 'em, one espresso stand at the old Westlake tower entrance for the monorail. And, Tom Douglas was likely washing dishes somewhere in downtown Seattle.

The first restaurant I dined at was Anthony's HomePort in Edmonds and if you've been there, you know how unforgettable the view is of the Puget Sound, Olympic Mountains, Whidbey Island, the ferry, and the fishing boats. And, the food was really delicious. After I got the school thing out of the way and when I made real money, I took my dates out to this remote locale because of the really good food at a reasonable price, good service, and a knockout view was all I needed to keep my "slugging percentage" up for the night. Sure, there were other Anthony's... ...

Last night (March 25, 2010) I participated in what may be the largest wine tasting ever. The #WAMerlot was a twitter event where anyone anywhere was encouraged to taste a Washington Merlot wine and share their experiences on Twitter. I was invited to host this event for Russells Dining & Bar in Bothell, WA. The Merlot we had for tasting was the 2007 Hestia Cellars Merlot. I had my laptop set up and tweeted the comments of the visitors as well as my own experiences. All Tweets included the hashtag (#) of #WAMerlot. This event was created and organized by a fellow tweeter Josh Wade (@NectarWine). Many wine shops, wineries, and restaurants hosted events around this and was a great success. I look forward to the next Washington Wine event.

We stopped in to CandyBar, a hip little wine bar and dessert lounge in the Western Addition (A.K.A. NoPa) Neighborhood in San Francisco. The clean, minimal design and comfy seating invited us to come in, (we couldn't stop ourselves!), and pick from the small, but nice, menu of sweet and dry wines. Or maybe we would get crazy with one of their specialty cocktails; like the Blood Orange Bellini, or the Blueberry Pomegranate Fusion. Then there's the sweets! Oh my! There's a Butterscotch Chocolate Browie... or Blueberry Mochi Cake... or Banana Bread Pudding... oh, it is something.
The wine list is cool, too. They've got about six each of reds and whites, then a few sparkling and dessert wines. We tried Steven Bannus 2008 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, and Pozzan 2007 Napa Valley Zinfandel, which were both well balanced and delicious. The Pinot was elegant and smooth. The Zinfandel spicy, with nice dark fruit and a nice finish. Just about all the wines are available by... ...

My first experience with this venue was for a tweetup where we were served samples of their woodfired flat bread pizzas and their house wine Wrongo Dongo.  This wine from Jumilla Spain called Monastrell is a Mouvedre and is an awesome bargain.  The Pizzas ranged from Blue cheese with figs to procuitto with truffle oil all were superb.  My next experience was for Valentines dinner (on Saturday the 13th) The cocktails were delish and the starters were Mussels and Duck Sliders, both were devoured by our group.  Then we had a range of pizzas and one had the shortribs not a disparaging comment from anyone.  Service was spot on on a very busy night.  This will become a regular date night spot.  I also overheard they are working to increase their local (WA) wine list. Check their website for the menu.

I was invited to a tweetup at Epulo, which for the uninitiated is a live meeting of Twitter folks to sample then twitter about a subject, be it food wine or some other subject.  I invited my friends from Edmonds Winery and were greeted by the General Manager and @incrediblechef who were hosting the event.  We were served samples of their wood fired pizza and $2 glasses of Wrongo Dongo Mouvedre from Spain an awesome 92-94 point wine.  The pizzas were tasty, my favorite was the Prosciutto with shaved Grana Padano, garlic, truffle oil, arugula . All the samples were great, with a thin crispy crust and just the right amount of toppings.  I made reservations for Sat the 13th for my wife and I to try their full menu.  The atmosphere is relaxed yet trendy and the service was amazing.

There are now over 500 listed connections, so if each of you get two new members and they get two new members this thing will really take off.  Next time you visit your favorite winery ask them if they are on WineCHATr or if you have a winery ask your customer's if they are on WineCHATr.

Budget-conscious wine drinkers thinking insidethe boxModerately-priced domestic labels are the driving force behind wine'sbright future, but don't invest all your money in Franzia stock just yet. Thewine trade-down trend may not be as extreme as it is in other markets, perhapsbecause of wine's role as a symbol of status and sophistication. During the height of the financial crisis in 2008, shattered consumerconfidence caused a 3.2 percent decline in the U.S. wine market. However, asconfidence and spending picks up, Chicago research company Mintel predicts thewine market will stabilize and increase by 2.1 percent in 2009, putting it backin line with the market's 20 percent increase from 2004-09. "Value wines have helped consumers rethink their perceptions aboutwine. Domestic wines have proven to be somewhat recession-proof asunpretentious, economy-priced wines are fuelling recent sales," says SarahTheodore, senior food and drink analyst at Mintel. "As wine finds its wayout... ...

We just released the Yakima Valley - Red Mountain oniPhone app. Our app takes visitors with an interest in wine, food and culture ona personal tour through wineries, restaurants, hotels and cool stuff to do inthe wine regions of the U.S. We just released Yakima Valley and WillametteValley. Napa and Sonoma will be released in January 2010.
How are we different from other apps?
- “In sharp contrast to many iPhone travel apps, theWillamette Valley ($4.99) and Yakima Valley ($4.99) travel guide doesn't relyon scraping data from various websites that anyone with minor search engine skillscould easily access online. Every photo, tour map and written review werecreated and poured over by us personally. It's much like having a personalconcierge in the palm of your hand." Read The entire review at - iPhonesavior.com
- We list “Most Overrated – Usual Suspects” offering fairwarnings about wineries, restaurants and hotels that we consider tourist trapsand... ...

How do the Wine Scores equate to each other?

Different people like to rate wines in different ways, and we aim to please. So we give you 2 options.

You can rate wine on a scale of 0-5 Glasses, or for finer detail, you can rate wine on a 100 point scale.

We do the conversion for you so all Wine Ratings display both values. The table below shows you the conversion:

= 50 points or less.
= 51 - 57 points.
= 58 - 62 points.
= 63 - 67 points.
= 68 - 72 points.
= 73 - 77 points.
= 78 - 82 points.
= 83 - 87 points.
= 88 - 92 points.
= 93 - 96 points.
= 97 - 100 points
